Accessibility
This site should work for everyone who needs it — including people using a screen reader, a keyboard only, voice control, or a much larger text size than we picked. Here's where we stand, and how to reach us if we've got it wrong.
What we're aiming for
Upstate Medical Exchange aims to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA — the standard most widely used to judge whether a website is accessible. We build and test against it, and we treat falling short of it as a bug like any other.
Accessibility is never finished. The site changes, and each change is a chance to break something. So this is an ongoing effort rather than a box we've ticked.
What that means in practice
Our audience skews older, and a lot of people reach us on a phone in bright daylight. So the choices here lean further than the standard requires: body text is 18px rather than the usual 16px, every tap target is at least 52px rather than the 44px minimum, and body text sits at 16.65:1 contrast against the page — well past the 4.5:1 the standard asks for.
Every part of the site works with a keyboard alone, every control shows a clear focus outline, and if you've asked your device to reduce motion, we turn our animations off.
The site is built to stay readable when you zoom in — text reflows rather than forcing you to scroll sideways.
Where we know we fall short
Automated tools catch maybe half of accessibility problems. The rest need people, and we're a small operation. We haven't yet had this site tested by someone who uses a screen reader daily — that's the honest gap, and it's the one we'd most like to close.
If you use assistive technology and something here fights you, you'll know it before any tool tells us. We'd genuinely rather hear it.
